2 Thessalonians 3:1-5
_______________________________________
Review of Previous Chapter:
In the second chapter of 2 Thessalonians, Paul elucidates the sequence of end times events, revealing the lawless one's coming, and the mystery of lawlessness. He ends with a strong exhortation to stand firm in the teachings of the faith and remain steadfast in God's love and grace.
Introduction:
In 2 Thessalonians chapter 3:1-5, we witness Paul's closing words to the Thessalonian church. The apostle requests prayer, warns against idleness, and ends with a benediction. The theme we'll focus on today is "Prayer, Work, and the Peace of God." This is part one of a two part message.
Point 1: The Power of Prayer (2 Thessalonians 3:1-5)
Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread quickly and be held in honor, just as it was with you. [2] And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not everyone holds to the faith. [3] But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. [4] And we have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do what we command. [5] May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.
Talking Points:
Verse 1 - Paul's request for prayer for the success of the Gospel: This aligns with Ephesians 6:19, where Paul asks for prayers that he might boldly declare the Gospel.
Verse 2 - Prayer for deliverance from wicked and evil people: The psalmist echoes this plea in Psalm 140:1, "Deliver me, LORD, from evildoers; protect me from the violent."
Verse 5 - Prayer that God directs hearts to love and endurance: The promise of God's directing is also found in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Summary and Invitation:
In the closing chapter of 2 Thessalonians, Paul highlights the power of prayer, the importance of a diligent work ethic in the Christian community, and the lasting peace that comes only from the Lord. It's a reminder for us to be constant in prayer, active in good works, and reliant on the Lord's peace.
Today, I invite you to reflect on your own life. Are you praying diligently for the spread of the Gospel and for protection? Are you active in your work and in your community? Are you experiencing the peace of God in your life? Let's open our hearts to these truths, taking them to heart as we navigate our Christian journey.
