Psalm Twenty Three

The Shepherd’s Care and Provision

_______________________________________

Reading

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Introduction

Psalm 23, often referred to as the "Shepherd Psalm," stands as one of the most beloved and memorized chapters within the sacred collection of biblical psalms. Whether one finds themselves in the calm pastures of contentment or navigating the treacherous valley of despair, the words of this psalm have a unique ability to resonate, offering a reassuring hand of divine presence and provision.

Background

Attributed to King David, this psalm provides insight into the heart of a man intimately acquainted with both the pastoral scenes of shepherding and the tumultuous arenas of leadership and warfare. David, initially a shepherd boy tending his father's flock, became the celebrated king of Israel. His personal experiences, ranging from quiet moments in green pastures to facing looming threats like the towering Goliath, endowed him with a profound understanding of reliance upon God.

Though the psalm was written long before the earthly ministry of Jesus, it is rich in themes and imagery that can lead us to understand and appreciate the person and work of Christ more deeply.  The psalm, in essence, paints a picture of God's care, guidance, protection, and provision—a picture that is fully embodied and exemplified in Jesus Christ.
