Encouragement in Persecution

2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

________________________________

Review of Previous Chapters:

As this is the opening chapter of 2 Thessalonians, we recall the closing themes of 1 Thessalonians: a call for readiness for the day of the Lord, instructions for Christian community living, and final blessings. Paul commends the Thessalonians for their faith, love, and endurance in trials, expressing his hope for their spiritual growth and reminding them of their place in God's kingdom.

Introduction:

Today, we dive into the first chapter of 2 Thessalonians, where Paul continues his discourse to the church at Thessalonica. In this chapter, the apostle brings encouragement in persecution, highlights the justice of God's judgement, and prays for the believers' worthiness. The theme we will focus on is "Standing Firm in Faith Amidst Persecution."

Point 1: Encouragement in Persecution (2 Thessalonians 1:1-5)

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: [2] Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. [3] We are obligated to thank God for you all the time, brothers, as is fitting, because your faith is growing more and more, and your love for one another is increasing. [4] That is why we boast among God’s churches about your perseverance and faith in the face of all the persecution and affliction you are enduring. [5] All this is clear evidence of God’s righteous judgment. And so you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.

Talking Points:

Verse 3 - The Thessalonians' growing faith and love: The believers are commended for their growing faith and love, reflecting the principle in 1 Peter 1:22, "Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart."

Verse 4 - Perseverance in the face of persecution: The commendation for perseverance in trials is mirrored in James 1:12, "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."

Verse 5 - The evidence of God's justice: The afflictions the Thessalonians endure serve as evidence of God's justice, aligning with the words in Romans 12:19, "Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord."

Point 2: The Justice of God's Judgment (2 Thessalonians 1:6-10)

After all, it is only right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, [7] and to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us as well. This will take place when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels [8] in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. [9] They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His might, [10] on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints and regarded with wonder by all who have believed, including you who have believed our testimony.

Talking Points:

Verse 6 - Retribution for those causing trouble: The theme of divine justice is echoed in Psalm 94:1, "The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth."

Verse 7 - Rest for the afflicted: God's promise of rest for his people is stated in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Verses 8-9 - Punishment for those who do not know God: The consequences of not knowing God are clearly articulated in John 3:36, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them."

Point 3: Praying for Believers' Worthiness (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12)

To this end, we always pray for you, that our God will count you worthy of His calling, and that He will powerfully fulfill your every good desire and work of faith, [12] so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Talking Points:

Verse 11 - Paul's continual prayer for the Thessalonians: The apostle's devotion to prayer aligns with Colossians 1:9, "For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you."

Verse 11 - God making the Thessalonians worthy: The theme of God's transformative power is reiterated in Philippians 2:13, "for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."

Verse 12 - Glorifying Jesus through believers' lives: The desire for Jesus to be glorified in believers' lives reflects Jesus' prayer in John 17:10, "All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them."

Summary:

In 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12, Paul shares the promise of God's justice, the value of enduring faith amidst trials, and the power of prayer. He encourages us to grow in faith, love, and steadfastness, relying on God's justice and praying for His transformative power.

I invite you to reflect on your own life. How can you stand firm in your faith despite adversities? How do you perceive God's justice in your life? How can your life bring glory to Jesus? Let's open our hearts to these questions and trust in God's faithfulness and justice in our lives.
